DMV Fall Jamboree Recap

It was rainy all weekend but it didn’t stop 45 of the top teams in our region coming together to prep for the upcoming season. A vast majority of the games came down to the wire and there were college level prospects at every turn. Below are some highlights from Day 2 and our All-Jamboree teams from this past weekend. For footage of the event check out our streaming partners, the Commonwealth Basketball Group.

New Coach, Same Results

As’Ad Pompey; Soaring Eagles

Angelo Hernandez is one of the most successful coaches of the last 5 years, leading Wilson HS (Jackson-Reed) to numerous state titles and sending an insanely high number of players on to Division 1 schools. He also was instrumental for many years leading Team Durant’s 16u team to deep runs in the Nike EYBL. His latest endeavor lands him at National Christian Academy (Eagles fly high!!) where he takes over for Kenny Johnson (Rhode Island Univ) and looks to keep the momentum going from what has been put in place. His first year team looks to have D1 and D2 players across the roster led by the talented back court of Turner Harris and As’ad Pompey (New Heights Lighting). It was tough to say which player was most impressive as they both had scintillating performances. As’ad had an event high 32 points and Turner looked to be one of the more potent and aggressive combo guards in the event. Look for the Eagles to remain at the top of local rankings and could make a push into national ranking late in the year.

The same can be said for the Alexandria Slammers. Coach Dre takes over a program that has turned the corner in recent years and has turned itself into one of the areas best. This weekend his program rolled out a lineup led by Cole Cosby and Bryson Wilson. Look for SSSA to be one of the better teams this season with no major drop offs after losing all world guard Devin Ceaser.

Southern Maryland Basketball belongs to The U

Much has been said about the program led by Coach Brett Campbell. He has a great staff and a talented roster which could see his team right back in the state championship hunt again. Led by Diggie Holloway, The U upset the Alexandria Slammers in one of the top contests of the weekend. There aren’t a lot of household names on the roster but The U won’t duck any bump. They have cemented themselves as basketball royalty in the DMV and look to continue to build with continuity and hard work.

The Champs Return

Greg Jones; The Hawks

Carlos Poindexter’s team went undefeated last season led by Greg Jones. This season, he will lead a new supporting cast with a few transfers. Don’t expect much of a letdown as the momentum is building at Hayfield. They will again be one of the stronger teams in the region and have some young talent on the roster who will step into leading roles this season. The champs may not end 32-0 this season but don’t expect anything less than a deep state title run again for the Hawks.

Takoma Academy has a talented core

Malcolm Day; Takoma Academy

Coach Credle has added some new coaches to his staff this season and this has paid off from day 1.  Led by Rejuan Gray and Malcolm Day, Takoma had two impressive performances this weekend. I am a huge fan of the development of Dorian Credle, who ran the show like a magician, and Oliver Spence is a young big who is raw but will develop into one of the better bigs in our area.
