The Valentine’s Day Showdown on Marlboro Pike
Tuesday night in Forestville, the two top teams in the WCAC went head to head with Paul VI able to pull away late. At different moments in the game you had the feeling that either team was going to run away with victory, but as you would expect in such a matchup, runs were made, stops were made defensively, shots were drained to quiet runs.
In the end, Favour Aire foul trouble and Dug McDaniels brilliance was too much for the Mustangs to overcome. Below are some notes on some of the players:
Dug McDaniel 2022- 2/15/2022
Point Guard, Paul VI HS
Dug has been on the national scene for what seems like an eternity in basketball years. With so much experience he never seems phased by anything that happens on the court. Playing the game with a smile on his face even as opponents attempt to disrupt his rhythm. It’s almost like he’s playing the game against himself, never rattled.
The Michigan signee paced himself before taking the game over against top ranked Bishop McNamara in the 4th with a flurry of high difficulty finishes with the game on the line.
Deshawn Harris-Smith 2023- 2/15/2022
Wing, Paul VI HS
Deshawn has the physical attributes to compete in a college game right now. He possesses great body control and is tough to contain once he gets down hill with his left hand.
Not just a scorer, Deshawn made several reads out off drive and kick scenarios as well as passes out of post double teams. Paul VI was able to make their run to take the lead, that they would not relinquish, in the third quarter to much of the efforts of Deshawn being able to get down hill and create opportunities at the rim or at the foul line.
Darren Harris 2024- 2/15/2022
Shooting Guard, Paul VI
Darren Harris is one of the top shooters in the region already as a sophomore. Any open looks are as good as a CashApp deposit. Darren also has a strong frame and deceiving athleticism which he has shown with a few sneaky dunks this season.
Tuesday evening Darren was able to shake loose to knock down timely shots all evening and was able to help Paul VI withstand an early McNamara run and hit shots late to break the game open.
Jeremiah Quigley 2023- 2/15/2022
Point Guard, Bishop McNamara High School
In two recent viewings the 2023 dynamic guard was able to get wherever he wanted to on the court using a shifty handle to keep defenders off balance and a soft touch to finish in the paint.
Matching up against two very talented guards recently and more than holding his, own. Jeremiah plays both sides of the court and is very strong out of the screen and roll, able to get where he wants, when he wants. He along with Jaden Johnson form what could be the most dynamic back court in the WCAC.
Jaren Curtis 2025- 2/15/2022
As a freshmen, he doesn’t look ready to contribute. Jaren has a thin frame and looks every bit a freshmen in stature. But his game screams upperclassmen. Routinely making plays for the mustangs in the form of offensive rebounds, defensive stops on 4 star prospects, even guarding players twice his size effectively. The upperclassman get a lot of attention but Curtis and several other complimentary players make the Mustangs very formidable. The WCAC playoffs will be very interesting this season.
